Over a 21 year period, the Irish Traction Group operated 45 railtours. Regrettably, these ceased when the cost of running the tours became prohibitive.

Detailed below is a list of all railtours that were operated by the Irish Traction Group and its trading subsidiary, ITG Railtours Limited, together with a list of each locomotive to have worked that particular railtour.

All the tour listings have itineraries, a copy of the tour brochure (if one was printed) and a copy of the commemorative ticket. Some of the listings include photographs of locomotives working the trains and while we would like to be able to show at least one picture of all the locomotives on each tour, there are a number of tours where we do not have pictures. If you have a picture of a missing locomotive (highlighted in red on the list below) the ITG would be very grateful if you would contact us with a view to using your photo on the website.

Railtours up to and including the ‘Flying Pig’ on 7th October 1995, were organised by the Irish Traction Group (with the exception of the ‘Clockwork Orange’ railtour on 22nd July 1990 which was organised jointly with Southern Railtours Limited). All railtours that operated between the ‘Yankee Explorer’ on 23rd March 1996 and the ‘White Rose’ on 5th December 2009 were organised by ITG Railtours Limited, the trading subsidiary of the Irish Traction Group. On 31st December 2009 ITG Railtours Limited ceased to trade, and the final railtour, the ‘141 Class Farewell’ on 6th March 2010, was once again organised by the Irish Traction Group.

In addition to the above, the Irish Traction Group and ITG Railtours Limited between them, have also organised seven visits to the Downpatrick & Co. Down Railway at which the following ex. CIE diesel locomotives have been used to operate special services:

On 13th November 1999, the Irish Traction Group operated a special train in connection with the Group’s 10th Annual General Meeting. This special train was not advertised to the general public and was only open to attendees of the AGM and invited guests. As such, it was not deemed to be a railtour and is therefore not included in the above list. The special train ran from Dublin Heuston to Wicklow and back, and was hauled by locomotive No. A39.

Including the seven visits to the Downpatrick & Co. Down Railway, a total of 97 different Irish diesel locomotives and 1 British Rail diesel locomotive have appeared on the railtours. A class by class summary of these locomotives is given below.
