Since the introduction of diesel powered locomotives on Ireland's railways, there has been a varied range of classes to cover the many duties across the yards, branches and mainlines of the network. Nine of these classes are already lost to us permanently, long since victim of the cutter's torch, with the only record of these locos now being on paper.
The Irish Traction Group has preserved at least one example of eight classes, with a further three classes being preserved by other groups.
There are now only two distinct classes of diesel loco left in traffic with Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail and NI Railways, namely the Class 201 (NIR 208) and the Class 071 (NIR 111). With the older 071 fleet currently undergoing comprehensive refurbishment, it would seem for the time being at least, that diesel traction will be around for a few years to come.
